Teach Me Humility

Just recently- when problems at work arose, the Lord showed to me again the pride in my heart- how often I want things done my way. And somehow, I got deceived into thinking- that “if in this situation my life will be better- “like this”– then it does not matter if someone else’s life will get harder when I get my way”.

One of the things I realized, is that so often, we focus on so many “great and amazing” attributes of God- but we refuse to acknowledge that Jesus said that He is meek and lowly in heart (Matthew 11:29) – and He is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). Somehow, that does not fit our modern theology.

The Almighty God, the Most High God, the Master, the Creator, and the Holy One- humbled Himself. He chose to leave His glory and become a human. We are not almighty, we are not the creator, we are not the most high- and yet we often find it difficult to humble ourselves.

When He became a human, He could have paraded his greatness, holiness, and His ability to do miracles- but instead He chose the path of humility, of meekness. Jesus did not say, Come unto Me to find rest for your souls- for I do miracles, I heal, I am great, I am so holy, I am so good.

He said “Come unto Me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.  Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls” Matthew 11:28-29.

Come unto Me for I am meek and lowly in heart. Learn of My humility and rest in Me. Jesus was humble, because He is love. And love does not parade itself as better. Love is kind, love is not proud, love is not puffed up, love is humble.

We so often get deceived into thinking that having rest for our souls- means getting things we want and having things done and happen our way- the way we want them. And we deceive ourselves into thinking that only then- our souls will find rest.

Jesus wants us to learn of His meekness and lowliness of heart. For it is not only when we come to Jesus that we find rest for our souls- but also when we take His yoke and learn of His meekness and humility- that we find rest for our souls.

 Teach Me Humility

Deliver me for pride, selfish ambition
For pride creeps in- when I am not on guard
And selfish motives me just start to govern
The moment that my eyes don’t look at Christ

Help me to single-minded be- Lord always
To look at things only through eyes of Christ
For I too often look through eyes of pride
And think I’m more important than all others

If I am inconvenienced- it’s big deal
 But others inconvenience I freely
If someone made my life hard- what a crime
But often I my faults don’t even notice

If someone spoke from heart of pride- that’s bad
But freely speak I sometimes very proudly.
Teach me humility, Lord teach me meekness
And how to gentle be with all the others

Jesus You said- to learn of You, from You
You said You’re meek and lowly You’re in heart
You were not governed by selfish ambition
You did not seek Your own- but Father’s will

You’re gentle Jesus, humble in the heart
In You alone we rest find for our souls
But we so often get deceived in thinking
That rest is having all things as we please

Jesus- You’re love and You in love walked earth
And love is kind, it’s patient, it’s not proud
It does not seek its own, is not puffed up
Love is not easily provoked, long-suffers

Love bears all things, all things endures -all things
Love is not rude, love does not brag at all
Love never fails; and love is always humble
For love is meek and lowly in the heart

Teach me humility, Lord teach me meekness
Teach me to love like You Lord love
Teach me to always, always look at Jesus
And in Your love to always Lord abide.

“Come unto Me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.  Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls” Matthew 11:28-29

“I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave Himself for me” Galatians 2:20

“As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love” John 15:9

  • Thank You Jesus that You give us eternal rest for our souls when we come to You.
  • Teach me to always take Your yoke upon me, and to learn of You Jesus. To learn from Your meekness, Your humility and lowliness of heart.
  • Thank You that You are love, and You exemplified what it means to be love here on earth. Teach me to exemplify Your love on earth.
  • Thank You Jesus that it is no longer I, but Christ who lives through me. And in Christ, I am meek, I am humble, I suffer long. In Christ, I am kind. In Christ, I do not envy and am not puffed up. In Christ, I do not behave rudely and do not seek my own. In Christ, I am not provoked easily. In Christ,  I think no evil, do not rejoice in iniquity but rejoice in truth. In Christ, I bear all things, believe all things, hope all things and endure all things.
  • Help me to not go back and try to live my life, but see myself as crucified with Christ, dead to sin, alive unto God, and now Christ lives in me and through me. Thank You for the victory in Christ!
  • Thank You Jesus that You have loved us as the Father has loved You. Teach me to abide in Your love always.
